Schools and Nurseries

In Qatar, there are many options for schools and nurseries. Some things to take into consideration:

  • As many of the schools have waiting lists, we recommend you to sign your children up for schools as early as you possibly can.
  • The school year starts in August/September and finishes in June.
  • Schools generally start the school day between 7.15AM and 8AM and finish the regular school day around 1.30-3PM. All schools also offer afterschool activities (ECA’s) which extend the school day with 1 hour.

Schools

There are many international schools in Doha, which offer International, British and American curricula.  Some schools mix curricula to exactly meet the learning needs of the international students. Popular schools among the Shell community in Doha are: American School of Doha (ASD), Compass International School and Doha College. Please find below an overview of the curricula of a number of International schools in Doha.

Special needs

There are very limited options for children with special needs. Therefore we recommend parents to thoroughly investigate the schooling options for their children before deciding to accept an assignment in Qatar. For more information, please click here to read the Outpost Schooling Guide to Qatar.

Nurseries

There is a wide choice of nurseries in Qatar. Doha Mums is a great resource for parents with children and publishes the very detailed Doha Mums Nursery Guide . Currently the most popular nurseries among Shell expatriates are Starfish Lane Nursery, Twyla Nursery on The Pearl, Little Leaders and Tiny Town Nursery.

Nurseries usually operate from around 7am until around 2pm. Some nurseries offer extended opening hours at additional cost. Children attend from 1 to 5 days a week depending on individual requirements. Please note that fees are at parents’ expense up to age 3.

After school care & after school activities

In Doha there are no child care centres that offer after school care for primary school students. For this reason many people choose to hire a full time nanny/maid to look after the children after school hours.

There are various options for afterschool activities, such as sports clubs, swimming lessons, tennis lessons, dancing, horse riding etc. These activities generally take place in compounds using the shared facilities or at the facilities of schools. Please check with the reception of your compound which classes are available.
